FIRMS Fire Collector

Overview

Fetches fire and thermal anomaly detections from NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS). Detects fires, explosions, and industrial activity near monitored military sites and critical infrastructure.

Schedule

Every 4 hours via Dagu.

Data source

NASA FIRMS — satellite-based fire detection using MODIS and VIIRS instruments.

Processing

1. Query FIRMS API for detections within the Baltic region and near monitored military sites
2. Filter by confidence level and proximity to sites of interest
3. Record location, confidence, brightness, fire radiative power, satellite source
4. Submit to ingest API

Limitations

• False positives from industrial activity, agricultural burning, and solar reflection
• Cloud cover delays detection
• Resolution limits mean small fires may be missed
